About the Role
In the broadest terms, the Asia Pacific Medical Officer’s responsibility is supporting the CMO in the delivery of IMG’s clinical services. These are currently provided by doctors and nursing officers from locations in the US, UK and increasingly internationally. The role-holder will be expected to periodically travel to our medical and operational hubs worldwide as new services and products are developed.
The role is extremely ‘hands on’. Physicians in the company have a leadership role and we expect direct involvement in case management, documentation and decision making both
within and, when on call, outside office hours. Throughout these on call periods it is expected that Physicians are proactive, document their discussions with treating teams abroad, give clear direction, and escalate cases to the Group Chief Medical Officer where required. They will also assume direct responsibility for the clinical aspects of transfers being undertaken during these periods.
Key Responsibilities
The portfolio of insurance products and service offerings provided by IMG is broad and the role reflects this. It includes elements of assistance, aviation and travel medicine and both travel and medical insurance. The role will support business activity originating in all our centers worldwide. Broadly speaking, deliverables fall into the following categories and comprise (but not limited to) the following:
Insurance:
Activity across the Enterprise relates to the design, sale and servicing of insurance products, either underwritten by our parent company or by others. Medical input into this process includes:
- Advising the commercial and underwriting teams of the risks associated with pathologies or broader populations as they design new products and assess the performance of existing books of business.
- Review individual cases for compliance with plan wordings and breach of exclusion clauses in live claims.
- Assisting in the determination of medical necessity and ‘customary and reasonable practice’ in live cases and in precertification.
- Assist the CMO in gathering information when investigation of complex cases is required.
Assistance services:
IMG provides a broad range of domestic and international assistance services to our members and those of our insurance, corporate, governmental, and NGO clients. These include remote assessment of clinical needs, transfer to local or regional facilities for stabilization and treatment, evacuation and repatriation, medical concierge and pre and post deployment planning. We also provide commercial transfer capability from our London Unit, staffed by UK doctors and nurses.
- Supporting the nursing teams on all sites in the remote management of patients globally.
- Advising on safe and timely intervention in the context of the members insurance cover.
- Liaison with patients, relatives, treating physicians, suppliers and other agencies to ensure safe and timely patient transfer.
- Documentation of involvement in case management and the provision of clear direction to colleagues in both Operations and Medical units.
- To assist the CMO in the maintenance of clinically robust commercial transfer services from our UK (and possibly other) locations.
- To determine if the clinical status of a patient meets the requirement for evacuation or other benefits.
- To assist the CMO and other departments in the detection of fraud.
- To regularly attend team, governance, network and other meetings.
- In office hours (and when on call) to maintain a global situational oversight of all high-profile cases and patients in transfer.
- To participate in an out-of-hour on-call rota at weekends and for short periods during the week at a frequency to be determined.
DBA and workers compensation:
- To support the workers’ compensation nursing team in the management of members who become ill or injured in the course of their work abroad. This includes their initial management and longer-term rehabilitation and return to work.
- Provide input into the management of our network of field case managers.
Governance and Quality Improvement:
- Participation in, and championing of, the Enterprise-wide clinical quality improvement program.
- Providing clinical input in root cause analysis of incidents or near misses.
- To escalate any clinical quality or safety concerns, wherever they originate in the organization in a timely manner, to the Chief Medical Officer.
- To attend clinical governance committee meetings and represent the CMO in their absence.
Network development and review:
- To participate in routine network / supplier management meetings alongside other representatives from Operational, Networks and Medical teams.
